8. Goffs Charcoal Hamburgers $
6401 Hillcrest Ave
Dallas, Texas 75205
Originally opened in 1950, this Park Cities staple has been serving charcoal grilled hamburgers to the community for 66 years and counting. Harvey Gough, who famously owned and operated the establishment for decades, was one of the more interesting characters in the history of the Dallas restaurant industry. His prodding and invasive sense of humor both entertained and frightened customers for years. The man once bought a statue of communist leader Vladamir Lenin from a Ukrainian factory and put it in front of the restaurant’s former location, complete with a plaque that read “America Won.” Gough was even known to chase patrons out of his restaurant with baseball bats for their hair being too long.
Gough would eventually sell his business in 2004, but the food quality would remain the same. The burgers are cooked to perfection on an in-house charcoal grill, topped with grated American cheese and completed with either their famous relish sauce or hickory sauce — these burgers are one of a kind in the Dallas area. Perhaps the most unique item on the menu however, is ‘The Deal’, which is a combination of a burger and a hot dog, covered in chili, all together on a bun.
